Welcome to The Simple Things, a newsletter inspired by one of my favorite Oscar Wilde quotes. This is a reminder to switch into your baby voice when you encounter a pup, treat yourself to some junk food with no regrets, and wear sunscreen.
Today’s titular quote is from “Truth” by poet Afaa Michael Weaver.

Last night for dinner I had a bag of queso-flavored Ruffles potato chips, 4 Reese’s Cups with Take 5 filling (pretzels, peanuts, and caramel), a can of Coca-Cola, and 3 Heath cookies from Publix. Sometimes we need/deserve a trash day and yesterday was it for me. I have no regrets, only that I wish I had discovered sooner how delicious pretzels are with peanut butter cups.

I started subscribing to CompostNow, which picks up from my home every other week and turns my organic trash into nutrient-rich soil that I can get delivered for my hypothetical garden or I can choose to donate it to a community garden. They currently operate in Atlanta, Asheville, Charleston, Cincinnatti, and Raleigh-Durham and you can get $10 off with this link.1 Also recommend this adorable compost basket with these bags.
Made this rice cooker bibimbap with some pre-marinated bulgolgi from HMart and it’s really leveled up my office desk lunch. I’ve also gotten into the habit of making a large batch of oatmeal for breakfast. I make it with just water and some salt so I can switch up the flavors based on my mood: jalapeño pimento cheese with salsa, egg, and 1/2 an avocado; pumpkin spice with a splash of milk and maple syrup; or Greek yogurt and a swirl of strawberry jam.
